Tanner used this painting to display his own unique twist on the principles of cubism. The twisting branches are depicted from a varying perspective and the sections of overlap create a series of fractured planes. The composition deconstructs conventional perspectives and opens new possibilities for conveying reality. The overlapping patterns recall the rhythms of jazz music and the movement of bodies dancing or tree branches swaying in the wind.
Tanner’s smooth color transitions and crisp lines sometimes lead casual observers to question whether Tanner’s art is digitally rendered. With Pixels, Tanner leaned into the incorrect assumption viewers have made by adding a layers of colored squares or pixels throughout abstracted forest scene.
